Poway’s Sheriff Staffing Challenge

Recent thefts reported along Stone Canyon Road and several surrounding streets are a reminder that Poway is not immune to crime. When residents have property stolen from their homes, vehicles or neighborhoods, they want more than a report taken after the fact. They want a strong law-enforcement presence that helps deter crime and deputies available to respond when something happens.

Our Poway deputies do an outstanding job, but they cannot be everywhere at once. That makes staffing and deployment critical.

The Poway Sheriff’s Station has historically been listed with 45 sworn personnel. Today, the Sheriff’s website lists 44. That number alone does not prove that patrol staffing has been reduced, because sworn personnel include patrol deputies, supervisors, detectives, traffic personnel and other assignments.

But it raises an important question:

How many deputies are actually available for patrol on each shift?

Poway pays millions of dollars each year for law enforcement through its contract with the San Diego County Sheriff. Residents deserve to know whether we have adequate patrol coverage for the community we have today—and how that coverage will keep pace with future growth.

As your City Council representative, I will push for greater transparency regarding patrol staffing, vacancies, shift coverage, response times, overtime and the number of deputies actually available to patrol Poway neighborhoods.

This isn't about criticizing our deputies. It is about making sure they have the resources and staffing necessary to protect themselves and our community.

Public safety isn't simply about how much we spend. It's about having enough deputies in the right places, at the right times, to deter crime and respond when residents need help.

Poway residents deserve to feel safe in their own neighborhoods—including Stone Canyon.
